Born from Passion, Built for Colleagues

The Paediatric IMG Communication Simulation Day is the brainchild of two dedicated registrars, Dr Spandana Pakalapati and Dr Mahreen Sohail, developed in close partnership with Soft-Landing, a programme committed to supporting internationally trained doctors settling into NHS life. Driven by a deep passion for their colleagues’ success and wellbeing, Spandana and Mahreen identified a critical need: IMG doctors and those new to the region often face unique challenges when it comes to communication in clinical settings. Rather than leave their peers to navigate this alone, they took action.

What began as a vision to bridge cultural and communicative gaps has grown into a highly regarded simulation event that puts doctors at the centre of realworld paediatric scenarios, helping them build confidence, sharpen their skills, and ultimately make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.

What Is the Day All About?

This interactive, full-day session is specifically designed for IMG paediatric doctors and those new to working in the region. It goes beyond the textbook, focusing on the human side of medicine. Participants will develop skills in building rapport with young patients and their families, navigating difficult and emotionally charged conversations with care and confidence, and understanding and respecting cultural differences in communication; a vital skill in today’s diverse healthcare environment.

Crucially, the session also encourages doctors to be effective advocates for their paediatric patients, giving them tools to speak up, make change, and champion the best interests of every child in their care. Led by experienced paediatric consultants as part of the faculty, the simulation is a safe, supportive space to learn, reflect, and grow.

A Journey of Impact

The Communication Simulation Day was first piloted in the South of the deanery, where it quickly gained a strong reputation for its practical, immersive approach. Building on that success, the event made its debut in the North East Midlands last year and the response was extraordinary. Attendees praised the session for its relevance, depth, and warm, collegial atmosphere. The feedback confirmed what the organisers had always believed: this kind of training doesn’t just improve exam scores; it transforms clinical practice.

“I have passed my MRCPCH clinical exam this time with 8 and 7 marks for communication stations. Your session was immensely helpful for these good marks. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you.”

Proudly Supported by the School of Paediatrics

This year’s event once again has the full backing of the School of Paediatrics, whose support reflects a shared commitment to inclusive, high-quality training for all doctors, regardless of where they trained. This institutional endorsement means participants can book the day as study leave, making it easier than ever to attend without disrupting clinical commitments. The session is completely free of charge, and lunch is included, removing any barriers to participation.

The School of Paediatrics’ involvement also signals the broader importance of communication training within postgraduate medical education and the recognition that culturally sensitive, patient-centred communication is a cornerstone of excellent paediatric care.
