Training Day: East Midlands North ST4-8
Updated 23 June 2024
We have monthly training days which cover different specialities within paediatrics and each training day has an allied Progress+ curriculum item for maximal curriculum coverage. Each training day is mentored by 1 or 2 ETC members but each trainee will be expected to contribute to organising at least one training day within a team of other trainees over your 3-4 year training period. these are assigned annually and we try our best to align these to your interests. Allocations are normally sorted towards the end of the year.

Training days are spread over Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to allow more LTFT people with fixed days to attend. We try to alternate between face-to-face at the Postgraduate Medical Education Centre (PGMEC) at QMC and on Teams, though this may be subject to change in coming months/year. You can pay for parking at the PGMEC on the day which is £5 on a first-come-first-serve basis. These dates are sent to the rota co-ordinators in plenty of time so they should be embedded within your rota wherever possible.

If you choose not to attend a training day when you are rostered to attend, you will be expected to be at work on a normal working day, whatever that looks like for you. As adult learners, you are encouraged to make that decision but we would strongly suggest attending to ensure adequate coverage of the Progress+ curriculum.

If you are organising an East Midlands North ST4-8 training day...
...congratulations on being chosen! The topic will be an area of paediatric practice (e.g. rheumatology and MSK) as well as a Progress+ domain for maximal coverage (e.g. Safeguarding). We currently alternate between virtual on MS Teams and face-to-face in Nottingham's PGMEC.
If you have been selected to organise a training day, you will have an email telling you which topics and who your organising team is. Please organise a way of communicating between yourselves and find the relevant SPIN/GRID people for contact and help 🙂
You will also have a committee member to mentor you through your organisation, so please contact them if you are having issues and keep them abreast of your progress with your program.
Organising a training day usually requires some planning and the earlier you can approach speakers to develop your program the fewer issues we normally have. We're all busy people, so the more notice people have the better. We aim to have the program finalised at least 2 weeks before the day, so please keep this in mind so that we can circulate programs and links in good time to trainees. Please use the support of the SPIN/GRID trainees, consultants and us if needed!
In the links below are a guide on how to organise a training day as well as a blank copy of the PowerPoint for you to put you timetable on. Please just fill out the timetable on slide 1, send it to your mentor and we will fill out the survey bit and send it back to you! Also we are encouraging each training day to have a slot for Wellbeing. The Wellbeing team have some suggestions which we have attached but feel free to do something you feel is appropriate 🙂
This is your opportunity to organise a really fun, educational and interactive day which can show good evidence in the "Education and Training" or "Leadership and Teamworking" Progress+ domains. We do not issue certificates for organising training days, but strongly suggest that you create a development log as evidence to show what you have learned about the process (much better evidence). If the feedback is completed by attendees, you can upload this as further evidence but be mindful that this takes about 1 month to process.
